Six Paintings of Dogs with Still-lifes
"These paintings are a memorial to our beloved friend and companion, 'Berry.' We named her that because she was black like a berry, and the first night she was with us, her deep voice, growling at the darkness, sounded 'beary.' She was a 'desert dog' who, earlier in life, lived in desperate circumstances, rearing her puppies in an abandoned building, trying to protect them from coyotes. She was an accomplished moocher, going to the back of desert cafes for handouts. She became the pet of a caring couple who later brought another dog into their household.

"Berry left them in search of another family where she could be 'top dog,' wandering ten miles through the desert with a great dane she acquired on the way. Berry showed up on our doorstep and stayed with us several days. Finally, with trepidation, we put an ad in the paper to see if there was a grieving owner somewhere. Having grown to love her already, we were afraid Berry's owners would show up and reclaim her. That is exactly what happened. We were quite sad, thinking perhaps we could buy her from them. But, a few days later, we saw a familiar black shape approaching through the desert. Berry had come back to us. We telephoned her owners. They came, but, with tears in their eyes, said if Berry loved us that much, she could stay with us. And she did. |
